Saving a script

One of WriterDuet’s primary goals is to ensure users always have access to the most recent version of their script. One of the ways WriterDuet does this is by continuously syncing with the servers when online. There are also a number of customizable backup options.

Options available to all users (both free and Pro):

  • Continuous sync when browser version is ‘online’.
  • Backup full revisions to the folder /Recent/xxxxx every time you save (only in Chrome browser. Note: your backup folder will have a unique 5-digit code after ‘Recent/’). This feature will keep the eight (8) most recent versions of the script in Chrome’s local storage.
  • To enable, use the following steps:
    1. Customize>Backups
    2. Select check box for ‘Backup full revisions to /Recent/xxxxx every time you save’Backup1
    3. Select ‘x’ to close window
    4. File>Save, or use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S or Cmd+S
    5. Go back to Customize>Backups
    6. /Recent/xxxxx is now underlined to indicate there are files available to view in the folder. Click underlined text to view folder.BackuptoRecent
    7. Click on desired file. This is a text file in Final Draft format, so Chrome will not recognize the special formatting. It will reformat when loaded back into WriterDuet.
  • Backup multiple revisions to /Backups/xxxxx every 10 minutes – this feature will automatically save the eight (8) most recent versions every 10 minutes without prompting.
    1. Customize>Backups
    2. Select check box for ‘Backup multiple revisions to /Recent/xxxxx every ~10 minutes’BackuptoRecent
    3. To access backup files: Open Customize>Backups
    4. /Recent/xxxxx is now underlined to indicate there are files available to view in the folder. Click underlined text to view folder.
    5. Click on desired file. This is a text file in Final Draft format, so Chrome will not recognize the special formatting. It will reformat when loaded back into WriterDuet. Note: File>Save will interrupt the 10 minute schedule and save a version immediately.

Pro Only Features – See ‘Saving and Backups in Pro Version’ article for step-by-step instructions:

  • Offline sync – if application is offline (disconnected from internet), all edits will save automatically to the browser cache, then sync with the servers and merge with collaborators once online/reconnected. This automatic caching will happen approximately every thirty (30) seconds.
  • Save immediately to the offline cache when saving (File>Save, or Cmd/Ctrl+S) – will immediately save to the offline cache instead of waiting for the 30 second schedule.
  • Backup options for Chrome and Desktop when offline.
  • Save to hard drive in Final Draft, Fountain, or Celtx formats when pressing ‘Save’ .
  • Automatic backup to Dropbox, Google Drive, or local drive with variety of time options. Automatic backup in the WriterDuet (.wdz) format is not available due to the massive file size.

Note: if scripts are encrypted, certain precautions should be taken by the user to ensure all work can be recovered. See ‘Encryption’ article for details.
